The tropical disturbance just to the east of Belize has organized further this morning, and is now a tropical depression, says the National Hurricane Center.

Forecasters expect the storm to move across Belize, Guatemala and Mexico during the next day, before possibly re-emerging into the Bay of Campeche on Tuesday. There it has brief window to become a tropical storm before moving into Mexico for a final landfall, probably to the south of Tampico.

It’s lucky that much of this system’s core is over Central America at this time — it has developed rather quickly despite the proximity to land — because it otherwise had the potential to develop into a hurricane.

This system is unlikely to have any significant weather effects on Texas. We can thank the high pressure that’s bringing us lots of heat and blue skies for that.
